Chocolate-covered raisins

Yesterday I was grateful for chocolate-covered raisins, for three reasons:

  •  PMS cravings monster.
  •  Post-run snack so I could get some errands done without collapsing.
  •  Another thing my newly-discovered half-sister and I share. (our love of chocolate-covered raisins, I mean—I’m not planning to share my actual Raisinets.  Are you people crazy?!)

Normally, I have at least a little control over the PMS cravings (ladies, green tea in large quantities helps), but add winter and work stress?  Must. Have. Chocolate.  With Raisinets, you can at least pretend they’re healthy.  Raisins are good for you, right?  And I normally mix in some plain raisins, because the chocolate to fruit ratio isn’t quite right for my tastes.  Add some nuts of your choice and you have a post-run feast.

Speaking of post-run feasts, I just made up a new trail mix.  Reduced sugar dried cranberries (thanks local health food store!), golden raisins (aka sticky raisins—bet you smarty-pantses can figure out why), and smoked almonds.  Tasty and pretty danged healthy too and the smoked almonds make it taste rich enough that chocolate isn’t really necessary.   I never thought I’d hear myself say that.  Chocolate?  Unnecessary?  For real?

I’ve been trying to invent a chocolate candy for my half-sister, so I’ve been bugging her about what flavors she likes with chocolate.  Somewhere along the line, we got on the subject of chocolate-covered raisins and discovered our mutual love of the little sweeties.  I’m pretty sure “her” candy will involve raisins and almonds aaaaaaand maybe chocolate truffle filling, I don’t know yet.  I’ll keep you posted.  Don’t say anything, okay?  Wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise!
